What Are Drone Goggles?

If you want to experience what the drone sees when in flight, you need to wear drone goggles. This will enable you to experience how it is to fly virtually.

First-person view, or FPV goggles, will allow you to feel like you are in the drone. To be able to experience this, you need to have a drone with an FPV system. The FPV goggles have cameras, antennas, video transmitters, and video receivers. This allows you to see what the drone camera records in real-time.

Most FPV goggles have a head-tracking technology where the goggles sense your head movements and transmit them to the drone camera. This can allow you to control the drone through your head’s movement.

If you already have a VR headset, you can use it as an alternative to FPV goggles. Most virtual reality flying drones are also not compatible with FPV goggles and require a VR headset to be able to use them for VR. Keep in mind that the setup is not as easy as wearing your VR headset and calling it a day.

We have yet to see drones that work with a VR controller without building an application programming interface (API). However, you can still experience virtual flying through a drone with a VR headset. You just need to use the drone’s controller to operate the drone.

Most VR drones work well with VR headsets that you can put your phone in but, some drones can work with headsets such as the Oculus Quest.

DJI Mini 2 3-Axis Gimbal with 4K Camera

This DJI Mini 2 is an ultralight and foldable drone that weighs less than 249 grams. It is very compact and convenient and you can bring it anywhere allowing you to capture memories wherever you are.

This drone has a flight time of 31 minutes and it has a 4K camera that lets you fly the drone farther while still seeing clear footage. The DJI Mini 2 is also able to transmit HD videos up to 10km away before it starts to lose its signal. It has an altitude of 4,000 meters and it can resist level 5 winds so you can expect stable footage even if you are flying your drone on a windy day.

If you like sharing your drone videos, the DJI Fly app lets you share footage directly on social media. You can even add soundtracks and filters to your finished videos. Beginners and experienced flyers will be able to enjoy capturing professional-level videos.

For an FPV experience, DJI has FPV goggles that are only compatible with their line of FPV drones. Like the Mini 2, this drone also can also resist a level 5 wind and is stable even when the wind is up to 38 kph. This drone is also lightweight and portable and you can bring it anywhere you go.

Since this is part of DJI’s Mini drones, it is not compatible with their FPV goggles. However, you can use third-party apps downloaded on your phone if you want to have a VR experience. 

Most users have said that the DJI Mini 2 SE is really great for beginners, especially if used only for recreational purposes. Some users did say that the connection is not reliable and they have a problem connecting the drone to their phone over WI-FI.

Most users have said that this drone is easy to fly but, there is a little bit of a learning curve. Since there is no gimbal on the camera, some users have some lower-quality footage.

Autel Robotics EVO Lite

If you want to have a longer flight time, the Autel Robotics EVO Lite has a flight time of up to 40 minutes. It also has an Autel SkyLink Video transmission which gives it a transmission range of 7.4 miles (11.9 km) and a transmission quality of 2.7K/30FPS. This allows the drone to give you visuals in high definition.

This drone can record up to 6K/30FPS video giving you cinematic professional-level shots. The drone’s Autel Sky app allows you to add soundtracks, and filters, and choose from four automatic shooting modes.

DJI Avata Explorer Combo – First-Person View Drone with Camera

Another drone from DJI that made it to our list is the DJI Avata Explorer Combo. This is a DJI FPV drone where you can experience an immersive and intuitive flight. The drone itself is palm-sized so you can easily maneuver it between gaps with no problem,

This drone has ultra-smooth 4K footage and has an upgraded camera system in place so you don’t need to get extra attachments. It also has a 1/1.7″ sensor, 155-degree FOV, and flagship stabilization.

Like other DJI drones, the DJI Avata also has a transmission range of up to 10 km. This lets you have a sharp and responsive HD live feed from the drone. With the drone’s motion controller, it will let you fly the drone intuitively. Even if you are a beginner, you will be able to operate it easily.

The DJI Avata comes with 2 motion controllers and a DJI goggle for a more immersive flight experience. Unlike the DJI Mini drones, this only has 18 minutes of flight time. If you’re looking for longer flight times, it is best to look at other drones.

Most users have said that the Avatar is great to fly and is perfect for all experience levels. They also said that the motion controllers make it easy to control the drone. On the downside, some users experience dizziness when flying the drone. Others have said that it is difficult to set up.

Last but not least for VR drones is the Parrot Bebop 2. This drone has a 20-minute flight time with a flying speed of at least 37mph. However, if you fly at full speed, chances are that the battery may not last that long.

This drone does not have a 4K video but, it has a 14-megapixel camera and can capture videos in 1080p. The Parrot Bebop 2 is lightweight and good for first-timers. It is also not as expensive as other known brands.

The Parrot Bebop 2 comes with FPV Cockpit Glasses so you can have an immersive flight experience.

For a lightweight drone, it can hold well against strong winds. However, since there are no obstacle avoidance sensors, the drone may be prone to crashing. This drone also only has 8 GB of internal storage and no slot for removable storage. You’ll have to be mindful when filming a lot of footage.

There is also no return-to-home feature so there is a chance that you can lose your drone if it suddenly has a battery failure mid-flight.

Most users have said that this drone is good to fly but, the battery does drain quickly. If you don’t have a need for a 4K camera or other features that high-end VR drones have, this drone can be a great option for you.
